MacBook on Rails

Posted by Andrew Fri, 24 Feb 2006 06:49:00 GMT

DHH, creator of Rails gushes about his new MacBook

For myself, I recently retired my dinosaur G3 iBook in favor of a last generation 15” PowerBook G4. I’m happy with that, and happy for all you guys with the big bucks who can enjoy the brand new toys.

That’s the good point with Apple pushing new machines to enthusiasts: the rest of the world can get last month’s kit for a damn good price!

Well… For travel, I follow my own advice and am perfectly happy with my 12-inch iBook from 2004. But for “real work” purposes, I recently switched from my trusty old Cube of 2001 to a best-and-last-of-breed G5 Quad. 25 times faster, sure, but noisier too! That beast should last long enough for Apple to make their next transition to Cell machines sometimes in 2010. Ah, predicting the future, what a lovely game ;-)

I order a new powerbook the first of the year and opted for a 17” powerbook G4 over the macbooks. After having a conversation with my apple rep, he couldn’t convince me that the mactel’s were any better except for speed, which i’ll take a swap in speed for a larger screen. He did say there were no plans on producing a 17” version of the macbooks, so I figured I would let the run for a year or two before I jump into them. Kind of like a new model car. Let someone else find the problems first.
